Every watch person has the lust, an undying desire to obtain the coveted crown, buying a Rolex for a regular person can seem like a thing of the past, like Rolex watches are only obtainable for the rich and famous. We are here to tell you that is simply not the case, Rolex has a watch that enthused collectors can have for under $5000 dollars, that you will not have to wait years on the dreaded Rolex waitlist to obtain. This watch may be much cheaper than other Rolex’s on the market but the Rolex quality and customer care are far from lost on this watch. We are of course talking about the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, the affordable Rolex.
The Oyster watch was introduced by Rolex in 1926 named as such for its oyster shaped case. The oysters call to fame was it’s being the first water and dust “proof” case, in actuality the oyster had a water resistance rating of 100 meters, an impressive spec for a watch of its time. The perpetual aspect of the Oyster Perpetual is from the introduction of Rolex’s perpetual rotor, a self-winding movement powered by the movement of one’s wrist, once the perpetual rotors were added to the oyster watches the Rolex Oyster Perpetual was born. When it comes to Rolex, consumers know what to expect every time, the utmost quality. With the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Rolex makes no sacrifice to quality in this low price option. When buying this watch you can expect 100 meters of water resistance so swimming and light snorkeling will be no problem for this watch. The oyster perpetual also comes of course, with sapphire crystal. Powering this watch is Rolex’s in-house caliber 3132 movement for the 39mm variant and the caliber 3130 movement for all other size options. Both movements have a power reserve of 48 hours, 31 jewels, chronometer complication, and 28,800 vibrations per hour causing a sweeping second hand in true Rolex fashion. These movements use a Parachrome balance spring and Paraflex shock absorption allowing the movement better resistance to exterior shock affecting the movement. The Oyster Perpetual case is made from 904L stainless steel that is heavily scratch and dent resistant. Rolex’s iconic Oyster bracelet upon which the watch is set is also made from 904L stainless steel with an oyster folding clasp. Five different sizes are currently offered from Rolex including 26mm, 31mm, 34mm, 36mm, and 39mm.
While not many, there are some downsides to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The biggest of which is the lack of complications in the movement, when spending over $5000 on a watch most collectors would expect at least a date window, not on this watch. We would argue that the lack of complications adds to the appeal of this watch as adding to the dial a tachometer for example would take away from the watches simplicity and elegance that makes this watch work so well. Another downside for some is that the largest size currently offered for the Oyster Perpetual is only 39mm. This size may be very small for those with large wrists or for people that are used to wearing larger watches.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual has great daily wearing capability because of it’s simple and elegant style. The watch is modestly sized with a plain but attractive dial. The options for the dial currently offered are either hour markers or Roman numerals and the Oyster Perpetual’s dial comes in a variety of colors with a sunray effect that you can view here. This watch is nothing but attractive with the perfectly brushed stainless steel, gently sloping lugs, and beautiful oyster bracelet, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual has a non-polarizing style that would be hard for any collector to stop loving.
Obviously, the area where this watch really shines is its value. You get Rolex with quality and service for just over $5000 making this watch for most an affordable Rolex, no other watch can claim that. Over recent years Rolex prices have raised so vigorously that buying one has become just a dream unlikely to ever be achieved by regular people. With the Rolex Oyster Perpetual, your dream of owning the coveted crown could become a reality without having to spend a house down payment. Even though the Oyster Perpetual is considered the lowest tier offering from Rolex, it still comes with Rolex’s full warranty package, fully covering the watch for five years, not including normal wear and tear, loss, theft, or damage due to misuse. The Rolex Oyster Perpetual also has incredible resale value as is the case with most Rolex watches. As long as the watch isn’t heavily damaged you can expect that if you ever were to sell an Oyster Perpetual that you’d get back a lot more of your original purchase price than you would when trying to sell most other watches.
